Whether you or a loved one has had a long period of hospitalization or immobility moving without assistance can be difficult. Ambulation assistance can be tricky and you want to ensure the right precautions are being taken. The rest of this article will give you some tips on what to look out for with safe ambulation and to help avoid falls.
Ambulation assistance is helping elderly or disabled people with limited ability to become mobile by walk or to a wheelchair, or sitting the person up in an upright or reclining position independently.
1. Know the Weak Side of the Patient
Understanding the weak side of the client lets the caregiver know which side they should work from. A gait belt may be required to help transfer the patient from one position to another.
2. LightingÂ
Its important there is proper lighting wherever the client is staying or is trying to go. When you have proper lighting it ensures the clients can move around their home avoiding obstructions and avoid injuries.

3. Telephone/ Emergency Devices
Having a telephone or emergency device should always be within reach of the client. Make sure the cellphone has a decent charger or charging device is nearby as well. If the client owns an Apple Watch, any other type of smart watch, or Life Alert it should be worn at all times in case the caregiver isn’t present in case of an emergency. Its also important to have emergency numbers on speed dial of such as 911, family members, or hospice.
4. Assistive Walking Devices
While walking devices are helpful for patients if not set up correctly the patient could be at risk of injuring himself or herself. You always want to make sure nonslip and supportive footwear is worn. Walkers and canes should always be within reach and adjusted to the correct height. To make sure the walker doesn’t roll forward when standing up make sure you place it directly in front of you. With wheelchairs rotators should be locked when first using them so they don’t roll out of place. Also ensure the wheelchair has a comfortable seating to avoid skin irritation and breakdown.
